The Basics You Need to Know for the Season

1.  While our three Monday night teams are up and running, we’ll never turn away a Griffith student.  Teams are also short of women players.  We love to teach new players!  Games are Monday nights from around 7pm-9pm.

2.  The draw is now available at:  http://buml.quda.org/matches/3  Now that we have been moved to the Rugby Field, the draw is very important as each week one of our teams will be away from Nathan.  Info about the other venues is at:  http://buml.quda.org/where-to-play

3.  The Club mostly communicates via the Facebook – so get on that group to stay up to date and maximise your fun:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/griffithuniultimate/

4.  Fees for Season 1 remain $20 for Griffith students, $30 for non-students.  This covers your membership through to the middle of the year, and includes a beautiful Griffith disc.

5.  You can contact the committee and asks questions and so forth at committee@griffithultimate.org

6.  If you can’t play Monday nights, there are lots of other opportunities to play Ultimate.  We play in some weekend tournaments, our friends at Griffith Gold Coast play on Wednesday nights, and there’s also lots of other Ultimate around Brisbane that you can turn up to.

Undefeated After Round 1

Just a quick update – last week saw a record three Griffith teams enter the Brisbane Ultimate Mixed League, and all three went home undefeated.

Veterans, the Go-Go’s, now in their third year, defeated the Apostles 16-11.

Newbies, the Yee Hars, won their first game ever, defeating arch foes the QUTies 9-7.

Meanwhile the Oh Yeahs, entering their second year together, drew with heavyweights Mellow Yellow, 11-11.

Don’t forget that next Monday 19 March, we move onto the Rugby Field, and the Yee Hars are away at the Annerley Junior Soccer Fields off Victoria Terrace, Greenslopes.

Registration Time!

Players for Griffith’s Season 1 2012 foray into the Brisbane Ultimate Mixed League (BUML) need to get themselves registered on their official website as soon as possible.
The Griffith Oh Yeahs have room for one more lady. The Griffith Go-Go’s have some space but some notable names haven’t registered themselves as yet. New players and overflows from last year’s teams will need to register with our new team, the Griffith Yee Hars, to ensure themselves a spot!
To register, go to www.buml.quda.org New players need to join AFDA (its free) which provides your insurance and national member number and login password. You can then login and register yourself by following the link at Team Registration.

Game On for 2012!

The Griffith Ultimate Club invite you all to our first night of 2012, Monday night 6 February, with lights on from 7pm to 9pm.

Rank beginners and those ‘new in town’ are very welcome! This is the time to have a go and meet the Club.

The Club will be doing some basic ‘getting back into it’ drills, and a pickup game.

It’s the AFL field at the Nathan Campus, off Kessels Road and across from QEII (same as previous years).

We have been having some adventures with the University in ensuring our field access for 2012. At the moment we are confirmed with the field for the next three weeks (assuming very good weather) and will be hosting pickup. We hope to have the rest of the year sorted asap.

Please note:
a) the rugby field has been partly dug up over the Summer – please stay entirely off it, including not walking across it from the other carpark. Please go around.
b) the AFL field has had some new turf put on sections near the goal mouth and the centre field. We need to stay off that as well as much as possible.

Players from 2011 and 2010 will want to get registered onto their prefered team.  To help form our third team, those who don’t register early will be bumped onto the new team (although you’re also welcome to step up and mould some newbies!)

Registration is at:  http://afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=1926

There’s a crapload of other stuff starting to happen for Griffith Ultimate in 2012 – keep an eye out here or on our Facebook group!

Griffith Ultimate Hosts Grand Final

So I just thought I’d better quickly report on the end of the season.

Once again we hosted the Brisbane Ultimate Mixed League Grand Final night at our home ground. Clearly, we’re the best!

The Griffith Go-Go’s finished their fourth season of Ultimate in 9th place, while the Griffith Oh Yeah’s finished their second season in 11th place.

Both teams had great runs over the final two months of the year, coming within a few points of winning a bunch of games and moving much further up the ladder.  Depending on turnover, I think we can expect both teams to make solid runs at the finals in 2012.

Well done also to the Griffith Go-Go’s, who won their THIRD Spirit Trophy in a row. THREE-PEAT!

In 2012 we hope to recruit and enter a third team, but more of that planning to come once we’ve taken a break. The Griffith fields will be closed for rehabilitation over the Summer, but we hope to be back just after Australia Day. Meanwhile, there is regular Monday night pickup at the Annerley Recreation Club fields at Greenslopes, from 7pm.

Griffith Go-Yeahs Take Fourth Place at Lovefest 2011

Well done to the Griffith Go-Yeahs, who took fourth place at UQ’s annual Lovefest tournament on the weekend. Last year we came 7th so we’ll call that a great improvement.

Meanwhile tonight the Griffith Go-Go’s and the Griffith Oh Yeahs go into Round 7 of the Brisbane League.

Round 1 – Go’s Go and Oh Yeahs Go Yeah

Round 1 Results

Go-Go’s 11 drew Mellow Yellow 11

Oh Yeahs 6 were defeated by Tsunami 15

Last night saw the start of the new season, with a surprising level of organisation and good turnouts and results for both teams.  Well done particularly to Brad and Marty for leading our Market Day recruitment last week.

The Go-Go’s played Mellow Yellow, who’ve recently been relegated from Division 1.  The Go-Go’s knew they were in for a hard game, so were very pleased to welcome aboard Carlos, Nick, Dan, Lauren and Katherine, plus JustplainDan who we’ve pinched from the Oh Yeahs.  Of the usual suspects, Jason, Casey, Sholto, Nealo, MysteryDan, JoeyDan, Andy, Lauren and Dusty rounded out the crew.

It was a fantastically well spirited match, and a great introduction to our newbies.  They got ahead but we clawed it back to be behind by one point at half-time.  A three point run after half set us up, but they came back and we went into the final point leading 11-10. But alas the Yellows got it in when it counted.  While it would’ve been nice to win, a draw was probably a fair result for two evenly matched teams.

The Oh Yeahs meanwhile confronted a team that was only defeated twice last second, and the second of these was in the Semi that kept them out of the Final.  So Tsunami were ready to rock.  The Oh Yeahs also had a bunch of new people and while we didn’t take the roll, it was great to see James, Brad, Marty, Luke, Aidan and Ashley kicking it with the homies.  From what I could see the Oh Yeahs were playing well, but Tsunami pounced on any errors and the score was eventually 17-6.

Next week the Go-Go’s take on the Disc-Iples (who lost by one last night against the Discheads), and the Oh Yeahs get a crack at Plastic Scourgery.

The Break and Next Season and Semester

This season is nearly wound up, so here’s what’s happening next.

The Break:  There will be Ultimate in some form or other every Monday night from 7-9pm over the break.  Bring a white shirt and a black shirt so you can end up on any team, plus a gold coin to help pay for the lights.

Next season:   Formally starts on Monday 1 August (Lecture Week 2).  To register on the Go-Go’s, go to here:  http://afda.com/rego/showteam.php?teamid=9754  To register on the Oh Yeah’s, go to here:  http://afda.com/rego/showteam.php?teamid=9755  Newer club members will need to dick around a bit to get regoed – sorry about that but you need to do it for insurance purposes.  Fees for the season will be $15 for current Griffith students, and $25 for non-students, as per last season.

For 12+ weeks of competition, its still the cheapest sport on campus!
